Teb’s Top 10 Favorite Books and Sites
Lord of the Rings Trilogy Directed
by Peter Jackson (books by J.R.R. Tolkein)
A stunning series of films that still manages to amaze me. My wife accuses me of being a bit obsessed. But what Peter Jackson did (with relatively little previous experience) is a superb series of films capturing the broad sweeping series of epic books. I still carry around an extended-cut DVD for long plane rides.
Tao of
Physics by Fritjtof Capra
This book, written in 1975, made a huge impression on me when I was younger. Merges western science with eastern philosophy. Started a lifelong fascination with alternative sciences.
-
West Wing (series years 1-3 by
Aaron Sorkin)
The first years were by far the best. Dazzling, snappy dialog, gripping drama, compelling characters. If only real politicians were this intelligent, inventive and insightful.
-
Snowcrash
by Neal Stephenson
The story of Hiro Protagonist is a gripping book. A terrific read that stakes out new ground in science fiction. As influential as William Gibson's Neuromancer was ten years earlier.
-
Half Life 2
(computer game by Valve)
I’m a huge gamer, and although I’m mostly partial to MMO’s, this is a stunningly engaging shooter with a soul. Gordon Freeman is a lone scientist trapped in a distopian, alien-infested future where friends may be enemies, mysterious authority figures in facemasks are trying to kill you, and your job is to survive and find out the secret of what happened at Black Mesa.
-
North by Northwest Directed
by Alfred Hitchcock
Many of Alfred Hitchcock's films are legendary, and this one has always been one of my favorites. Cary Grant running around Mount Rushmore in white socks with dress pants. Great story of mistaken identity, deception and spies. Perfect cold-war theater.
-
Enders
Game by Orson Scott Card
Science fiction that every day comes closer to reality. Very entertaining.
-
Tommy Boy (Chris
Farley Directed by Peter Segel)
Classic movie with a million great lines. -
Mad Men (series
on AMC by Matthew Weiner)
My new favorite series. A dramatic window back in time to the rise of the great advertising machine in the 50’s. Home of the men in the grey flannel suite and the three martini lunch.
-
Lanark:
a Life in Four Books by Alasdair Gray
Completely ignored book from Scottsman Alasdair Gray that I found in the bargain bin. Like Slaughterhouse Five, it defies definition. Drawings by the author and non-linear narrative combine to tell a story (out of sequence) of a city with no daylight, juxtaposed with Glasgow just after WWII.
